Have your cake and eat it too with Windows 10
Windows 10 is a free upgrade only until July 29 2016. This
article isn't about telling you to upgrade or why you shouldn't
but stay with your current operating system. It is instead about
how to give you the best of both worlds right now and not force
your hand into upgrading your current working system yet give
you the choice to do so in the future WITHOUT spending $120-200
on a new copy of Windows 10.
It is such a simple idea it hardly isn't worth a whole article!
But I've got to spread the word.
Take your system - desktop, notebook, doesn't matter - and your
restore disks (you know where they are, right? If not, you should
see about making some from the image that was likely included with
your computer...), go to Micro Center or your favorite computer
store and get a new hard drive for less than $75. I just priced a
1 TB 2.5" notebook drive for $64.99 or for your desktop a WD Blue
1 TB 7200 RPM drive for $44.99.
Install the new drive in your system, restore it to factory
fresh, do all the updates it wants, and then ... Let it upgrade
itself to Windows 10!
Play with it for a few minutes, make sure it phone home to the
Microsoft Mother Ship so they know the system has a Windows 10
license, then swap the original hard drive back in your computer.
Now after July 29 - maybe it is in 2020 when Windows 7
support is likely to end - you can swap the "new" windows 10
installed drive back into your system and have a running Windows
10 upgrade that you don't have to pay for.
